This test is performed to demonstrate the quality and reliability of devices that are subjected to specific conditions over a given period of time. Data is collected at specified intervals (every 72 hours is typical) and such tests can take up to 30 days (720 hours).

Mechanical Shock

Mechanical Shock testing of the devices X-Y axis determines the suitability of the devices for use in electronic equipment which may be subjected to moderately severe shocks as a result of suddenly applied forces or abrupt changes in motion produced by rough handling, transportation, or field operation. Shocks of this type may disturb operating characteristics or cause damage similar to that resulting from excessive vibration. Devices are tested to MIL-STS-202, Method 213B and are typically subjected to three saw tooth pulses with an amplitude of100 g’s for five to six milliseconds in each axis direction. After testing, the devices are visually and electrically tested after testing to look for failures.

Power Burn-In

Frequency technology , Inc. is a worldwide leader in Crystal Frequency Control and Filter devices. Powered burn-in testing screens for and eliminates marginal devices, those with inherent defects or defects resulting from manufacturing weaknesses which cause time and stress dependent failures. Burn-in profiles are chosen to verify the capability of the product to perform under load and to eliminate infant or latent failures.

Seal Testing

Frequency technology , Inc. is a worldwide leader in Crystal Frequency Control and Filter devices. Fre-tech is a major partner to many of the largest OEM’s in the world, in some of the most demanding operating environments in the Military, Aerospace, Avionics, Telecommunication, Instrumentation and Microwave & RF systems. Critical to our success is the ability to test, qualify, and troubleshoot our extensive portfolio of products. The only way to reliably do this is with internal test facilities. In order to determine the effectiveness (hermeticity) of the seal on the device, both gross (Fluorocarbon liquid) and fine leak (Grade 5 helium tracer gas) testing is performed. Seal tests are performed in accordance with MIL-STD-883, method 1014, conditions C and D. Gross leak detection is performed with an Intertest Bubble Detector, model 1014-CBL (Top right) which is followed with a fine leak detection using a Varian Leak Detector, model 959-50 (Bottom right). Gross leak testing is done with the devices immersed at a depth of 2 inches over a 3 minute period examined by a 3X magnifying window. Fine leak testing is performed for periods up to 60 minutes pressurized @ 60psi.

Sine Vibration

Frequency technology , Inc. is a worldwide leader in Crystal Frequency Control and Filter devices. Fre-tech is a major partner to many of the largest OEM’s in the world, in some of the most demanding operating environments in the Military, Aerospace, Avionics, Telecommunication, Instrumentation and Microwave & RF systems. Swept Sine Vibration testing determines the effect of high-frequency vibration on component parts in the frequency range of 10 to 2000 Hz as may be encountered in aircraft, missiles and tanks, etc. This test does not strike random frequency vibrations, but sweeps across the frequency spectrum as prescribed by specific test parameters. Compliant to MIL-STD-202, Method 204, devices are mounted into a custom fixture and placed on the vibration shaker. When the test is completed, the devices are visually and electrically tested to look for failures.

Solderability and Resistance to Soldering Heat

Frequency technology , Inc. is a worldwide leader in Crystal Frequency Control and Filter devices. Fre-tech is a major partner to many of the largest OEM’s in the world, in some of the most demanding operating environments in the Military, Aerospace, Avionics, Telecommunication, Instrumentation and Microwave & RF systems. Critical to our success is the ability to test, qualify, and troubleshoot our extensive portfolio of products. The only way to reliably do this is with internal test facilities. Fre-tech have invested heavily to support this business model. As a result, Fre-tech has a fully equipped test laboratory to test all types of products. This test performed in accordance with MIL-STD-202, Method 208 and resistance to solder heat per MIL-STD-202, Method 210,Test Condition C. The terminals are exposed to a solder bath of 350ºF, at an immersion angle of 90º. The devices are then held in the solder bath for a period of five (5) to ten (10) seconds. The solder is applied to either ¼ inch from the nearest insulating material of the component or ½ of the exposed length of the terminal (which ever is closer). This test verifies that pre-assembly lead finish provides a solderable surface and sufficient quality to make an acceptable solder joint. By passing, it proves that the device can withstand the heat applied during the solder operation.

Stabilization Bake

Frequency technology , Inc. is a worldwide leader in Crystal Frequency Control and Filter devices. Fre-tech is a major partner to many of the largest OEM’s in the world, in some of the most demanding operating environments in the Military, Aerospace, Avionics, Telecommunication, Instrumentation and Microwave & RF systems. This test proves the resistance of a device to extreme high and low temperatures. Fre-tech uses Blue-M Thermal Shock ovens, Model WAP-109-D with full data capture. Tests are compliant to MIL-STD-202, method 107. Typical tests can be 1000 cycles of temperature shock for a total of 100 hours with a low temperature of -650ºC and a high of +150ºC with each cycle held for 15 minutes between the extremes with a transfer time of 15 minutes. When this testing is complete, devices are removed and electrically tested to search out any failures.
